Vice reports that a Chinese woman pretended to have Coronavirus to fend off a sexual predator.

The anonymous woman from Jingshan City, Hubei, had awoken to find a male stranger in her bedroom. When she screamed for help, the man covered her nose and mouth and strangled her.

According to the Jinghsan police’s official account on WeChat, the man identified as Xiao, then tried to “commit an act of obscenity towards her.”

The woman then forced a cough and said, “I just returned from Wuhan and already have symptoms of (the coronavirus). That’s why I’m at home under self-quarantine.”

25-year-old Xiao then left the woman’s house in a hurry but managed to take her phone and 80RMB from her bag.

After reporting the incident at the Pingba police station on the same night, Xiao turned himself in.

Xiao claimed he had fought with his family and ran away from home, adding that he broke into the woman’s house as he had no money.
