The landscape of mobile entertainment is undergoing a significant transformation as traditional cinema houses pivot toward ultra-short media formats. South Korean content studio SHOWBOX has finalised a global co-production agreement with ReelShort, the world’s largest micro-drama streaming platform.
The deal aims to create premium, vertical-format serial dramas specifically designed for smartphone users. Under the terms of the contract, SHOWBOX will develop new series based on existing ReelShort properties, while also creating entirely new, original micro-dramas. ReelShort will hold exclusive global distribution rights for all content generated by the partnership.
Re-Engineering Television for Smartphones
The partnership represents a major bridge between traditional high-budget South Korean production models and mobile-native viewing habits. ReelShort, launched in 2022 by Crazy Maple Studio, currently commands over 70 million monthly active users across more than 100 countries. The application specializes in ultra-short, serialized episodes that users watch vertically on mobile devices.

The initial production slate features three distinct Korean micro-dramas titled Tell Me Not to Love You, My Secret Lover Is His Brother, and Queen Never Cry. SHOWBOX intends to utilise its long-standing industry infrastructure to elevate the production values of these short series, targeting an international audience that has grown increasingly hungry for fast-paced Korean entertainment.
The Rise of Vertical Entertainment
SHOWBOX is recognised as a major institutional player in South Korean cinema and television. The studio is responsible for massive box-office hits such as Exhuma, A Taxi Driver, and the recent 2026 feature The King’s Warden. The company also established a strong international television presence by producing the hit Netflix series Itaewon Class and A Killer Paradox.

The studio began testing the short-form market late last year, commencing production on two initial mobile projects titled Bridal Shower: The Missing Bride and The Fallen Idol Is Possessed! Company executives stated that the alliance with ReelShort will serve as a definitive launchpad to accelerate their footprint in global digital media.
A spokesperson for SHOWBOX explained that the collaboration will blend their established production capabilities with ReelShort’s extensive audience data and distribution networks. The studio aims to use the venture to establish new commercial benchmarks for short-form entertainment, expanding beyond traditional genres into innovative formats. The deal follows a similar international expansion strategy by SHOWBOX, which recently included a major partnership with Thailand’s M STUDIO as the firm actively diversifies its business model to meet shifting consumer habits.
