South Korea has unveiled its highest official honours for pop culture figures, recognising legendary rock innovators alongside modern stadium-filling idol groups. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency presented Orders of Cultural Merit and government commendations to thirty-six individuals and teams at the 17th Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards, held at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul.

The event serves as the state’s top recognition programme for performers across music, television, cinema, theatre, and voice acting.

The government posthumously awarded the Silver Order of Cultural Merit to rock pioneer Shin Hae-chul, who died in 2014. Officials credited Shin with leading the mainstream popularisation of Korean rock music through his experimental arrangements with bands such as N.EX.T following his debut victory at the 1988 University Song Festival.

BLACKPINK members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa received the Jade Crown Order of Cultural Merit, marking their tenth debut anniversary year with official state honours for expanding the global reach of the Korean Wave.

Veteran Broadcasters and Voice Actors Receive Top Orders

Five industry veterans received the Precious Crown Order of Cultural Merit during the ceremony.

Television host Yoo Jae-suk earned the medal for three decades of work leading variety programming, alongside blues and rock singer Han Young-ae, who is celebrating fifty years in music.

The government also recognised behind-the-scenes pioneers. Theatre producer Park Myung-sung received the honour for staging domestic productions of Mamma Mia! and Chicago, while jazz pioneer Shin Kwan-woong took home the medal for half a century of contributions to the local jazz circuit.

Voice actress Park Young-nam received the Precious Crown Order for voicing classic animated protagonists across decades, including the title roles in Dooly the Little Dinosaur and Crayon Shin-chan.

Presidential and Ministerial Commendations

The ceremony handed out honours across every tier of the entertainment business.

Presidential Commendations went to music director Kang Seung-won, rock band Boohwal, long-running idol group Super Junior, film director Jang Hang-jun, and actors Yoo Hai-jin, Ryu Seung-ryong, and So Ji-sub.

Prime Minister’s Commendations recognized radio host Bae Mi-hyang, filmmaker Yoon Ga-eun, traditional pansori performer Lee Ja-ram, composer EJAE, music duo AKMU, and actors Yoo Seung-mok, Kim Go-eun, and Oh Jung-se.

Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young underscored the government’s commitment to supporting the creative sector during his official address:

“This year’s awardees are individuals who have spent a long time alongside the public in their respective fields on stage, in broadcasting, and in film, leading the development of our popular culture and arts. We will spare no support so that popular culture and artists can continue their creative activities with pride, and we will consistently strive to remember and honor the footsteps and achievements they have left behind.”
