Amazon is developing a new half-hour comedy series starring breakout comedian Atsuko Okatsuka, with acclaimed director Hiro Murai attached as an executive producer.
Details around the project remain tightly under wraps, but the series is described as a starring vehicle for Okatsuka centered on modern marriage. The project is being developed alongside writer-producer Josh Rabinowitz, with Murai executive producing via Super Frog. Ramy Youssef will also executive produce under Cairo Cowboy, alongside Entertainment 360, Okatsuka, and Rabinowitz.
Okatsuka’s involvement continues a rapid rise across comedy, television, and film. The Japanese-American comedian has built a strong global following through her stand-up, currently touring internationally with her Big Bowl Tour.
Her latest special, Father, premiered on Hulu and Disney+ and earned a Webby Award for Best Comedy & Stand-Up. Her debut special, The Intruder (HBO), was named the best debut comedy special of 2022 by The New York Times and also took home a Gracie Award.
She is set to further expand her footprint with a third comedy special arriving on Netflix next year, as well as a growing list of acting credits that includes Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Pixar’s Elio, Jonah Hill’s Outcome, and Judd Apatow’s upcoming comedy The Comeback King.
Behind the camera, Hiro Murai brings significant prestige to the project. The Emmy-winning director and producer recently scored two more Emmy nominations for Apple’s Widow’s Bay, which leads all new programs this year with 19 nominations.

Murai is also attached to upcoming projects including FX’s The Marriage Plot, continuing his strong run of visually distinctive, genre-blending television.
The collaboration between Okatsuka and Murai signals a notable pairing of comedic voice and cinematic direction, positioning the untitled Amazon series as one to watch—particularly as Okatsuka continues her transition from stand-up standout to multi-platform star.
