Video game Crimson Desert has become a major win for Pearl Abyss, and now it has drawn praise from South Korea’s prime minister. The open-world action-adventure game sold 5 million copies in under a month, making it the fastest console game in Korean history to reach that mark.

South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said the game elevated the status of the country’s gaming industry globally and credited Pearl Abyss for building the title with its own technology from start to finish. He also pointed to the game’s use of Korean cultural elements, including taekwondo and Korean cuisine, as part of what gave it wider appeal.

In his statement, he said the success “opened a new chapter in K-content” and argued it showed Korean game developers could expand more strongly across consoles and other platforms. He added that the government would “take responsibility and provide active support” and work to create an environment where K-games can stand as a pillar of K-content.

“I sincerely congratulate the success of Crimson Desert, which has elevated the status of the South Korean gaming industry on the global stage.”

“The living game world, crafted entirely with their own technology from start to finish, graphics akin to photorealism, and proactive communication has captured the hearts of players worldwide. By naturally weaving in Korean elements such as Taekwondo and Korean cuisine, they have opened a new chapter for K-content.”

“This accomplishment serves as a crucial turning point, demonstrating that the domestic game industry can expand and leap forward across diverse platforms, including consoles. “The government will take responsibility and provide active support. Pearl Abyss announced on April 15 that Crimson Desert had crossed 5 million sales in just 26 days. That pace beat Neowiz’s Lies of P, which had sold 4 million copies over a far longer period, and underscored how quickly the game has scaled internationally.

Crimson Desert was released on 19 March 2026 on macOS, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. The game’s launch has also helped keep attention on Korean premium PC and console releases more broadly.

Industry coverage notes that titles such as Stellar Blade, Lies of P, and other recent blockbusters are part of a wider shift as Korean studios push harder into Western markets and away from older, mobile-led business models.

Crimson Desert’s success matters beyond one title because it reflects a broader change in the Korean games industry. Developers are increasingly using major exhibitions like gamescom to debut high-profile PC and console projects for global audiences.

That makes the Prime Minister’s praise not just a congratulations, but a sign of how central games have become to Korea’s cultural export strategy.
