The 98th Academy Awards on Sunday marked a turning point for representation in animation. KPop Demon Hunters, the musical action-comedy from Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix, took home the trophy for Best Animated Feature. The win concludes a dominant awards season for a film that has successfully bridged the gap between global pop culture and cinematic achievement.

Co-director and writer Maggie Kang and producer Michelle Wong are now the first individuals of South Korean descent to win an Oscar in this category. They accepted the award alongside co-director Chris Appelhans. The film’s victory follows a string of previous wins, including two Golden Globes and the first-ever Grammy Award for the K-pop genre.

A Message for the Next Generation

During an emotional acceptance speech, Maggie Kang addressed the significance of the win for the Korean community. “For all of those who look like me, sorry that it took us so long to see us in a movie like this,” Kang told the audience. “But it is here, and that means that the next generations don’t have to go longing. This is for Korea and for Koreans everywhere.”

Chris Appelhans echoed this sentiment, focusing on the global nature of modern creativity. He urged young artists in every corner of the world to “sing in your voice,” promising that “the world is waiting.”

Since its release in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters has become a massive commercial success. It reached the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s global charts and became a rare streaming title to find success in traditional theaters. The film’s soundtrack, featuring hits like “Golden” and “Your Idol,” became the highest-charting score of 2025 on Billboard.

The plot follows a fictional girl group called HUNTR/X. Members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey balance the pressures of global stardom with a secret life spent protecting the human world from underworld spirits. The characters have become so popular that they inspired widespread Halloween costumes and propelled the real-life vocalists behind the voices—Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami—to international fame.

Looking Toward the Future

The Oscar win arrives at a perfect time for the franchise. Netflix recently closed deals with Kang and Appelhans for a sequel, part of a new multi-year partnership with the directors. While a release date for the follow-up remains unconfirmed, the original film’s legacy as a cultural bridge appears secure.

Host Conan O’Brien presided over the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre, which saw the film celebrated not just for its technical animation, but for how it used music to connect audiences across borders.
