Amazon slammed for ‘racist yellowface’ Chinese costumes

Amazon has come under fire for selling “racist” Chinese costumes.

British MP Sarah Owen brought the issue to light after sharing screenshots of multiple costumes being sold on the site.

Had a frustrating meeting with @AmazonUK who can’t understand why these images of #yellowface are offensive and need removing,” the Labour MP wrote.

“Slanted eye makeup, descriptions like oriental, Chinaman, Far East + mixing up Japanese/Chinese culture is not ok,” she added.

“Share & tell Amazon they are wrong,” Owen urged her followers.

In Owen’s images, one costume titled “China Girl” shows a caucasian model in a pink qipao.

Another image shows a caucasian male model with his hands in a prayer gesture whilst dressed in traditional Chinese clothing, with a fellow female model holding a Chinese umbrella.

One image shows a white model wearing Chinese clothes, sporting a caricature goatee.

Last month, Owen revealed that UK MPs called Chinese people “evil bastards” during a Coronavirus racism debate.
