The videos were accessible for 24 hours before Facebook removed them
A Thai man filmed himself killing his baby daughter and posted the two video clips on Facebook before ending his own life.
According to the Independent, the videos of the 11-month-old’s murder remained on Facebook for 24 hours before they were taken down around 5pm Bangkok time in Tuesday.
The footage showed Wuttisan Wongtalay tying a rope around his daughter’s neck before dropping her from a rooftop of a building in Phuket.
Wuttisan then committed suicide off camera. Police officer Jullaus Suvannin told Reuters that his body was found next to his daughter’s. “He was having paranoia about his wife leaving him and not loving him,” Jullaus said.
Thai citizens were outraged by the clip.
“This is the most evil clip I’ve seen in my life,” said one Facebook user, Avada Teeraponkoon. “I couldn’t stand it for more than one second.”
“How can he watch his own child stop breathing?” said Rujirek Polglang. “He should have just died alone.”
Thai deputy police spokeswoman Kissana Phathancharoen told Reuters, “It could be influenced by behaviour from abroad, most recently in Cleveland.”
The first video drew in 112,000 views by mid-afternoon on Tuesday and the second 258,000, before they were taken down.
“In the future we will discuss inappropriate online content, whether on Facebook or YouTube or Instagram, and how we can speed up taking this content down,” deputy national police spokesman Kissana Phatanacharoen added.
The incident comes less than two weeks after a man filmed himself shooting dead a random member of the public in Cleveland, Ohio, and posting it on Facebook.
“This is an appalling incident and our hearts go out to the family of the victim,” a spokesperson for Facebook said.
“There is absolutely no place for content of this kind on Facebook and it has now been removed.”
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, said last week that his company has “a lot of work” to do on the problem.
