Disney’s live-action film Mulan will be released on 2 November 2018.

The studio is currently launching a global casting search for Chinese actresses to star as the legendary female heroine.

The movie will be released in 3D and will be based on the classic musical animated hit of the same name, which was released in 1998. Mulan tells the tale of Chinese legend Hua Mulan, the daughter of an aged warrior who disguises herself as a man as she takes her father’s place in war. With the help of her trusted sidekick dragon, Mushu, Mulan develops into a skilled warrior.

The film follows that of recent live-action retelling successes such as Maleficent, The Jungle Book and Cinderella. Disney is also preparing for a release of the live-action Beauty and the Beast which opens on 17 March 2017.

Disney confirmed that Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurrasic World) were brought in to rewrite the script for Mulan. Both are also working on a sequel to Avatar. A director is yet to be announced but Jason Reed will produce alongside Chris Bender and Jake Weiner.

Last month, a petition calling for Disney to cast Chinese actors in its live-action rendition of Mulan garnered nearly 100,000 signatures.
