A new dating show in China allows parents to choose partners for their kids.

The first weekly episode of Chinese Dating, which aired on Christmas Eve, showed parents grilling potential bachelors and bachelorettes for to see if they could be a viable partner for their offspring. One parent asked, “can you do housework?” A 40-year-old divorcee and single mother was coldly rejected.

Whilst some critics branded the show a revival of outdated marriages, the program is not without progressive elements. The show featured two successful entrepreneurs and is hosted by China’s favorite transgender hostess.

Other critics suspect the show may be scripted due to its over dramatic nature, despite the producer denying such allegations in interviews.
