Plenty of actors pivot into reality television, but few do it by trying to resurrect a family dining dynasty without knowing how to boil an egg. Apple TV has released the official trailer for Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook, an eight-episode docuseries premiering globally on 6 November 2026.

The show follows Nora Lum, known professionally as Awkwafina, on a cross-country food road trip designed to help her reopen Lum’s, the historic Cantonese restaurant her great-grandfather founded in Flushing, New York.

The central hurdle is straightforward. Nora does not possess any kitchen training whatsoever.

“There’s a problem,” she confesses in the opening trailer narration. “I can’t cook. Like, at all.”

When she shows her homemade ramen and luncheon meat to her grandmother over FaceTime, the critique lands without hesitation: “It look like s—.” Asked why she never taught her granddaughter to cook, her grandmother delivers the blunt diagnosis: “Because you’re lazy.”

Crash Courses and Barbecue Roads

To make up for lost decades at the stove, Lum turns to some of the industry’s heaviest hitters.

The trailer shows her taking basic skills training at the Culinary Institute of America before hitting the highway for Texas pit-style barbecue alongside comedian Jimmy O. Yang.

“So we came to Texas to find your Chinese roots,” Yang observes from the passenger seat. “Yeah, exactly,” Lum replies.

Her training itinerary includes hands-on sessions with street food pioneer Roy Choi and television veteran Martin Yan of Yan Can Cook. Mentors make clear that reopening a restaurant involves far more than enthusiasm.

“You can’t roll out of bed and do it,” one chef instructs her. “We gotta go over prep, training, menu.”

Between plucking poultry feathers and managing industrial meat grinders, Lum works a high-volume service shift in Los Angeles’ Chinatown and travels to Hawai‘i to trace the Mid-century tiki culture that influenced the original Lum’s decor.

The Ultimate Family Inspection

Produced by British production company Twofour—the team behind Apple’s Emmy-nominated travel series The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy—the project is executive produced by Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss, and Caroline Davies.

Everything builds toward an emotional reopening service where Lum must feed paying customers alongside her family matriarch.

“Worst case scenario, I throw up, pass out,” Lum jokes about the pressure of the final service.

Her grandmother supplies the ultimate validation at the end of the footage, telling her, “I’m proud of you,” bringing the Crazy Rich Asians star to tears.

All eight episodes of Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook land on Apple TV on 6 November 2026.
