Donnie Yen has confirmed that filming is now underway on From the World of John Wick: Caine -marking the next move in Lionsgate’s ever-expanding assassin universe. The actor-director, who reprises his role as the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, shared the update over the weekend with a simple but telling Instagram post: “Here we go…”

The image — a production slate on day one — signals the official start of a project that has been quietly building momentum since its announcement.

First introduced in the 2023 blockbuster, Caine quickly emerged as a fan favorite. A blind High Table assassin pulled back into the violent world he tried to leave behind, the character brought a different emotional weight to the franchise — one shaped as much by duty and sacrifice as by survival. His mission to kill John Wick in exchange for his daughter’s safety gave Chapter 4 one of its most human conflicts.

With the mainline franchise surpassing the $1 billion mark globally, Lionsgate moved quickly to expand the universe. The standalone film was confirmed in 2024, with Yen later stepping in to direct — a move that signals a more personal creative imprint on the story.

From the World of John Wick: Caine is set after the events of Chapter 4, following Caine as he attempts to navigate life free from the High Table’s control. Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II, BRZRKR) is penning the script alongside Michael McGrale, while Rina Sawayama is expected to return as Akira.

Behind the camera, the core John Wick team remains intact. Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are producing alongside franchise architect Chad Stahelski under 87Eleven Entertainment. Keanu Reeves and John Saunders are also on board as producers, with Yen serving as executive producer in addition to directing and starring.

For Lionsgate, the decision to center a film around Caine was a natural next step.

“It became clear after John Wick: Chapter 4 that fans were particularly intrigued by Caine, which made his story the most natural next chapter of the franchise. It’s truly exciting to be embarking on a strategic partnership with Donnie—he has the vision to bring to life this extension of the John Wick universe in a way that’s authentic to his own signature style, flair, and expertise as a filmmaker.”

For Yen, the appeal of the character runs deeper than action.

“What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero.”
