A new television project is reclaiming one of the most controversial figures in literary history. Tzi Ma, Rae Dawn Chong, and Aileen Wu have joined the cast of Charlie Chan, a contemporary reimagining of the famous detective. Ma, a veteran of Mulan and Interior Chinatown, will take on the title role while also serving as an executive producer.
The series shifts the action to Vancouver, British Columbia. Unlike the original stories, this version follows a Hong Kong immigrant who retires from the Vancouver Police Department after facing years of professional frustration. He eventually opens a private agency to seek justice for the city’s marginalized residents.

For decades, the character of Charlie Chan was associated with racial caricatures and “yellowface” performances by white actors. This reboot aims to change that. Creators Quentin Lee and Josh Sager described the project as a “bold reclamation” of a difficult legacy. Their goal is to turn an offensive trope into a dignified, multi-dimensional protagonist.
Aileen Wu, who recently appeared in Alien: Romulus, will play Faye Chan, the detective’s daughter. Wu, who takes pride in her Filipino and Chinese heritage, brings a new dynamic to the family relationship that was often used for comic relief in older films. Her involvement highlights the diverse roots of the modern Asian-Canadian experience.
Global Representation in Vancouver
Rae Dawn Chong joins the cast as Detective Joyous Green. Chong noted that she was attracted to the “smart and quirky” nature of the scripts and the show’s commitment to diverse representation. Ma added that Vancouver is the perfect setting for the show because of its multicultural identity. He believes the series can showcase local Canadian talent to a worldwide audience.
The production comes from Margin Films, the banner behind the Canadian Screen Award-winning Comedy Invasion. The team will present the series to international buyers at the Series Mania Forum in France later this month.
