Awkwafina is set to join the cast of Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, a direct sequel to Descendants: The Rise of Red. The actor and comedian will voice Chessy — a new character widely believed to be a playful take on the mischievous Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.

The casting adds a dose of Awkwafina’s unmistakable humour and vocal swagger to Disney’s musical fantasy franchise, which continues to expand its fairy-tale universe with a new generation of characters.

She joins returning stars Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker, who reprise their roles as Red — the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts — and Chloe Charming, the daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Meanwhile, Rita Ora and Brandy Norwood return as the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella.

Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is the fifth instalment in Disney’s Descendants musical fantasy series, set for release on Disney+ in summer 2026. It follows protagonists Red (Cantrall) and Chloe (Baker) as they confront the consequences of their time-traveling actions from Descendants: The Rise of Red (2024).

Behind the camera, Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is directed by Kimmy Gatewood (The Muppets Mayhem), with a script by Tamara Chestna alongside Dan Frey and Ru Sommer. Franchise veterans Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh also return as executive producers.

Awkwafina has increasingly become a go-to voice actor for animated projects, thanks to her distinctive raspy delivery and comedic timing. She previously voiced Sisu, the last dragon, in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, and has appeared in major animated franchises including Kung Fu Panda 4.
