Director James Cameron has confirmed that Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh is officially part of the future for the Avatar franchise. While her involvement has been rumored for years, Cameron recently clarified that she will appear in the fourth and fifth films—provided they get made.

During an interview for the third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron explained that Yeoh’s role is a Na’vi character named Paktuelat. This will be a “performance-capture character,” meaning Yeoh will wear a motion-capture suit to bring the alien character to life through digital animation.

The Future of the Franchise

While fans are excited to see the Wicked star on Pandora, Cameron was honest about the hurdles ahead. The director noted that the movie industry is currently in a tough spot and that the expensive production of Avatar: Fire and Ash needs to perform well at the box office to justify the next entries.

“Avatar 3 cost a lot of money,” Cameron told TVBS News. “We have to do well in order to continue. We have to do well and we need to figure out how to make Avatar movies more inexpensively in order to continue.”

If the films move forward, Cameron plans to shoot Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 simultaneously. This approach mirrors how he handled the second and third installments to tell “one big story.”

A Long-Planned Arrival

Yeoh’s journey to Pandora has been a long one. Her casting was first teased back in 2019, and she has already filmed some of her scenes. Producers previously shared photos of her on set, leading many to believe she would appear in the third movie. However, Cameron set the record straight in 2024, confirming she wouldn’t debut until the fourth film.

The director explained that some parts of the later movies were shot early to keep the young cast from aging out of their roles. “We’ve been working on parts of 4 even as we go along… mostly because we’ve got this young cast,” Cameron said.

Yeoh herself has expressed nothing but excitement for the project. She previously joked that she would “be the tea lady” just to work with Cameron, whom she called a “walking genius.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently in theaters.
