A new eight-part international drama series titled Blood & Sweat is set to push the boundaries of global television. The project, led by Japanese actress Anne Watanabe and Finnish actor Jasper Pääkkönen, represents a significant collaboration across three continents, aiming to fuse distinct cultural and genre elements into a compelling crime thriller.

Blood & Sweat places Watanabe and Pääkkönen in the roles of detectives from different cultural backgrounds. Despite their origins, their shared commitment to justice propels them into a joint investigation. This mysterious serial murder case extends across vast geographical distances, with its threads stretching from Finland all the way to Japan. The series is currently in production, with filming underway in both countries.

The series is positioned as a “Japanese-Nordic noir,” a genre blend that promises to deliver a fresh viewing experience. Daniel Toivonen, who will also direct some episodes, told audiences to “be prepared for something you have never even imagined seeing before as we mix the Nordic Noir genre with Japanese aesthetics and characters.”

Producers involved in the project emphasize the unique synergy found in this international partnership. Tomomi Takashima, executive producer at Japan’s Wowow, stated, “Though Japan and Finland are far apart, this project has revealed unexpected cultural harmony between the two.”

Similarly, Ilkka Hynninen, creative director of Finland’s ICS Nordic, added that “Blood & Sweat is a great example of how international IP from Finland and Japan can be successfully brought to the international market. Developed in collaboration with our Japanese partners, this project blends Finnish and Japanese sensibilities to create a unique and exciting experience that resonates with global audiences and sparks the imagination of world citizens.”

The production is a complex web of international partnerships. Japanese satcaster and streamer Wowow and Finland’s Nelonen have co-commissioned the series. Japan’s AX-ON (a subsidiary of Nippon TV) and Finland’s ICS Nordic are attached as co-producers. Canada’s Boat Rocker has also joined the project, acquiring global distribution rights and providing additional production support.

This multi-partner approach reflects a growing trend in the television industry, where studios seek to pool resources and talent to create high-quality content with broad international appeal. Boat Rocker, for instance, has strategically invested in premium scripted co-productions, according to Jon Rutherford, the company’s president of global rights, franchise, and content strategy, who said “This exciting new project further underscores our commitment to strategically invest in premium scripted co-productions we believe in.”

Anne Watanabe’s involvement highlights her growing international profile. The Japanese lead has previously appeared in films like Cube and Stay Mum, as well as the TV miniseries xxxHOLiC. Her role in Blood & Sweat sees her stepping into a demanding, cross-cultural detective role, marking a significant step in her career and for Japanese talent in global co-productions.

The series is poised to offer audiences a compelling crime story while also showcasing a new model for cross-border entertainment development, potentially influencing future international television collaborations.
