Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang have been cast in a remake of Ang Lee’s acclaimed 1993 romantic comedy, The Wedding Banquet. The new version will be directed by Andrew Ahn, with Ahn and James Schamus (who co-wrote the original) penning the script. The updated story follows Min, whose marriage proposal to boyfriend Chris is rejected. To secure his green card, Min convinces his best friend Angela to marry him and helps pay for her partner Liz’s IVF treatments in return. Chaos ensues when Min’s grandmother throws a traditional Korean wedding banquet for the couple.

Ang Lee expressed his support for the remake: “It warms my heart to see how my film from so many years ago has inspired a new generation to reimagine a new and different version. I look forward to seeing what Andrew Ahn and his wonderful cast create.”

Andrew Karpen, CEO of Bleecker Street, which is distributing the film, added: “I’m delighted to re-team with my longtime friend and colleague, James Schamus, on this inspired reimagining of a classic rom-com for the modern era. Andrew Ahn is a force to be reckoned with and I’m very excited to see the new heights that he and James will take this story to.”

Filming will begin in Vancouver in May, with a planned 2025 theatrical release.
