NPR reports that Asian Americans are being credited for helping Joe Biden turn Georgia.

The Democratic President-elect won the typically Republican state with less than a 13,000-vote lead. Biden’s win marks the first time in nearly 30 years that the state turned blue.

Asian American and Pacific Islander voters nearly doubled compared to 2016 according to the Asian American Advocacy Fund. The group is the fastest-growing demographic in Georgia.

Over 300,000 registered voters identify as AAPI with more than 185,000 of the voting in 202o – which is a 63% increase compared to 2016.

Aisha Yaqoob Mahmood from the organisation said the demographic’s historic turnout contributed to giving Biden the small margin to win.

“Our playbook wasn’t just the work that we did in 2020, but it’s years of organizing in our communities,” she tells NPR’s Morning Edition. “Within such a diverse Asian American community, we can’t just have one AAPI organizer and call it a day. We have to have very specific ethnic organizers that are doing the very important and very specific organizing necessary for some of these communities.”

In other news, lawmakers are demanding that Members of Congress are demanding that Joe Biden must include Asian Americans in his cabinet.
