Axios reports that President Trump’s new re-election campaign is debuting its ‘Asian Americans For Trump’ initiative in a virtual event.

Streaming live on Team Trump Online tonight, the initiative will highlight how Trump has helped Asian American and Pacific Islanders during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Senior campaign advisor and daughter-in-law to the president Lara Trump will host the event.

One campaign official said the event will highlight initiatives such as the CARES Act and the Paycheck Protection Program which helped small businesses in the AAPI community.

Although President Trump has since stated that the virus is “not the fault of Asian Americans”, he  came under fire for repeatedly referring to the virus as “Chinese”.

At one point, the president even went as far as saying Asian Americans “would 100% agree” with calling the Coronavirus “The Chinese Virus”.

Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee and Utah Attoreney General Sean Reyes are both co-chairs of the coalition. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao will also introduce the event.

In 2016, Trump won 18% of the AAPI vote. Hilary Clinton won 79%. A Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee survey showed AAPI voters in battleground districts supported the Democrats over Trump by 28 points.

Recently, Trump tweeted that Asian Americans were “angry at China” after he was accused of racism.
