Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina has responded to her Golden Globes nomination for her role in The Farewell.

The Asian American actress, whose real name is Nora Lum, is nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

According to Bustle, Awkwafina responded to her nomination by saying, “I am beyond grateful to the HFPA, and to be grouped with such insanely talented actresses. I grew up watching the Golden Globes every year, cheering for my favorite films and actors. It is surreal that I now get to go! Wait, I do get to go right?”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Awkwafina described her “surreal” Golden Globes nomination experience. “I would never have expected something like this to happen, especially when we were filming,” she said. “We just wanted to tell the story. So to see that it’s getting recognition and to see the news today is really awesome.”

The Farewell is based on writer-director Lulu Wang’s life experiences. Awkwafina stars as a Chinese American woman named Billi who returns to China to visit her grandmother who is suffering from cancer. Billi clashes with her family who decide to keep her grandmother in the dark about her illness. Culture clashes and family are themes deeply explored in this touching tale.

Since it release the film has been well received, earning praising reviews for its portrayal of the immigrant life and the mixed culture dynamic.

The film even overtook Avengers: Endgame‘s per-theatre average at the box office. Kim’s Convenience star Simu Liu even bought out an entire cinema to promote the film.

In recent news, Awkwafina is reportedly on the path to be nominated for a historic Oscar Award for The Farewell.
