Simu Liu has bought out a cinema for the screening of Awkwafina’s film The Farewell

Kim’s Convenience star Simu Liu has bought out a cinema for a screening of Awkwafina‘s film The Farewell and is offering tickets to the public.

Liu is offering tickets for The Farewell at 930pm at Toronto’s Varsity Complex in Toronto. The Chinese Canadian actor made the announcement on Twitter on Instagram.

“TORONTO!” He wrote on Instagram,”I’m buying out a couple of theatres at the Varsity Cineplex tomorrow (July 23rd) for you guys to watch @TheFarewell with me at 9:30pm starring my friend and CO-STAR @AWKWAFINA and directed by the amazing @thumbelulu!”

He instructed those interested to simply show up and find one of his team handing out tickets and tell them the secret password. Liu warned that tickets will be given out on a first come first served basis.

“Find someone from my team at the theatre entrance starting at 8:45pm,” he said. “They’ll be wearing black shirts and tell them the password (#GOLDOPEN) to claim your tickets. First come first served!
Maybe I’ll get some friends to come through… @justinmin @ryankpotterwhat say you? 👀”

He added on Twitter that there are over 500 tickets available.

The Farewell is based on writer-director Lulu Wang’s life experiences. Wang discussed her life in a podcast titled ‘What You Don’t Know’ on radio show ‘This American Life’ in 2017.

Awkwafina stars as a Chinese American woman named Billi who returns to China to visit her grandmother who is suffering from cancer. Billi clashes with her family who decide to keep her grandmother in the dark about her illness. Culture clashes and family are themes deeply explored in this touching tale.

The film received praising reviews for its portrayal of the immigrant life and the mixed culture dynamic.

In other news, it was recently announced that Liu and Awkwafina will star in Marvel’s upcoming superhero film Shang-Chi.
