Awkwafina thanked Lucy Liu for helping Asian Americans during her SNL monologue.

Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina thanked Lucy Liu in her SNL monologue for “opening the door” for Asian Americans.

Awkwafina hosted an episode of the 44th season of Saturday Night Live with Seth Meyers on 6 October 2018.

During the show, Awkwafina noted that SNL did not have an Asian American host since Lucy Liu in 2000. Awkwafina revealed she actually attended that show during a monologue.

“Back in 2000, I came here to 30 Rock and waited outside when my idol Lucy Liu hosted SNL,” the ‘My Vag’ rapper said. “I was a kid and I didn’t have a ticket so I knew I wasn’t getting in. I just wanted to be near the building. I remember how important that episode was for me… It totally changed what I thought was possible or an Asian-American woman.”

Awkwafina went on to thank Liu for helping Asian Americans.

“Standing here tonight is a dream I never thought would come true,” she continued. “Thank you Lucy for opening the door. I wasn’t able to make it into the building back then, but, 18 years later I’m hosting the show!”

In related news, Awkwafina recently said the cast of Crazy Rich Asians “became a family.”
