Justin Chon has discussed the importance of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, which screened his film Gook, as well as the importance of Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow.

Speaking to Resonate at the LAAPFF, Chon said the festival “reminds us that our voices are important and for Asian Americans, there’s a Los Angeles film festival that showcases our work.”

The LAAPFF opened with Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow 27 April and closed with Kogonada’s Columbus, starring John Cho.

For Chon, Better Luck Tomorrow’s legacy is a reminder that the global Asian community needs to continue producing more films. “When I first saw that film, I was completely blown away,” Chon said. “It’s a reminder that we need to push harder. I wish we were further along than we are now.”

Chon also praised Justin Lin, saying his “meteoric rise” demonstrates that there is “space for us”.
