The original Ghost in the Shell anime movie will be returning to select US cinemas at the end of February, just before the live-action adaptation’s release.

The original Ghost in the Shell anime film was directed by Mamoru Oshii and was based on Masamune Shirow’s classic manga series. The classic 1995 film will be shown in 110 cinemas across the US. On 7 February, the film will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles whilst the English dubbed version will be shown on 8 February.

Tickets are now available through Funimation’s website.

Gen Fukunaga, founder and CEO of Funimation said, “We’re excited to be partnering with Lionsgate to bring the original Ghost in the Shell movie back to U.S. theaters. Ghost in the Shell is truly a seminal work in anime cinema and it helped firmly establish a market for the genre with U.S. movie audiences.”

Ghost in the Shell centres around government agent Motoko Kusanagi and her team who track down a mysterious hacker. The film and manga have been hugely successful and has been adapted into an anime series, several films and video games.

The live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson will hit cinemas on 31 March. The remake has been slammed for whitewhashing despite the film’s producers claiming to bring “the original anime to life”.
