Australian tourists paraded in ‘walk of shame’ for bicycle theft in Indonesia

Two Australian tourists were paraded in a walk of shame after allegedly stealing a bicycle in Indonesia.

Village chief Muhamad Taufik said CCTV showed the pair were seen stealing the bike from a hotel in Gili Trawangan, a popular tourist destination in Indonesia. The manager of the hotel had reported the incident.

“We interrogated them, made an agreement, paraded them around the island and forced them to leave Gili,” Taufik told AFP.

The Australian pair were forced to wear signs reading,”I am thieve (sic). Don’t do what I did…”

Gili Trawangan has been using the ‘walk of shame’ punishment for years. The punishment is not only reserved for tourists either, a few local Indonesians were subjected to the same punishment earlier this year.

“The walk of shame parade is a regulation in our village. I don’t know whether the police are charging them now, what matters to me is that they’re now gone,” Taufik said.
