Discovery Channel is leaning into the global K-wave with a surprising crossover concept, announcing a new Shark Week special inspired by Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters. Titled KPop Shark Heroes, the upcoming programme blends marine conservation messaging with K-pop star power—an unusual but timely mix as Korean pop culture continues to dominate globally.

The special stars Ken Jeong and Rei Ami, who fans will recognise as the singing voice behind Zoey in KPop Demon Hunters. Their casting also doubles as a reunion moment of sorts, with Jeong having voiced Bobby, the band’s agent and manager in the film.

According to the official synopsis, “After a recent series of shark encounters off the Korean Peninsula, actor and comedian Ken Jeong is determined to reshape the perception of sharks across East Asia and around the globe. Joined by movie co-star, Grammy-nominated singer and lifetime shark lover Rei Ami, Ken is on a mission to launch a bold, one-of-a-kind public awareness campaign that educates, empowers and shifts the narrative around these oceanic creatures using the power of K-Pop.”

Produced by Will Packer Media and Anomaly Entertainment, KPop Shark Heroes will air as part of this year’s Shark Week, which runs from July 26 to Aug. 1.

Jeong brings his signature comedic energy and mainstream appeal to the project, having built a career across both film and television—from The Hangover trilogy and Community to Crazy Rich Asians and his long-running role as a judge on The Masked Singer.

Meanwhile, Rei Ami represents a new generation of genre-blurring artists. Before her involvement in KPop Demon Hunters, she broke out with Sub Urban’s viral track ‘Freak’ in 2020, followed by her mixtape ‘Foil’ and EP ‘Shhh.’ Alongside collaborators Ejae and Audrey Nuna, she also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for ‘Golden.’

With K-pop continuing to evolve beyond music into film, animation, and now even environmental programming, KPop Shark Heroes signals how far the genre’s cultural reach now extends—straight into Shark Week territory.
