The Hong Kong action industry is preparing for what might be its biggest crossover event ever. A new historical project with the working title 1941 is currently in development. If the rumours are true, it will bring together almost every major legend from the golden age of martial arts cinema.

The film is being produced to mark the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China. It also serves a charitable purpose, with proceeds going to support elderly members of the Hong Kong Stuntman Association.

The “Three Brothers” Might Finally Return

While the cast list is massive, one potential reunion has fans particularly excited. The film could feature Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao on screen together for the first time since the 1988 classic Dragons Forever.

The trio, famously known as the “Three Brothers,” trained together as children at the China Drama Academy. Although they have worked in pairs over the last few decades, a triple-threat reunion has been decades in the making.

The confirmed and rumoured cast list reads like a hall of fame for action fans. Louis Koo, Nick Cheung, Daniel Wu, and Charmaine Sheh are reportedly set for lead roles. Other icons mentioned for appearances include:

The production team also hopes to bring in actors from famous franchises like Young and Dangerous and Infernal Affairs. Producer Teddy Chan noted that many of these stars are forgoing their usual high salaries because the film supports a charitable cause.

Directing and Production Details

Directors Chin Ka-lok and Wong Hoi will lead the project. Chin, known for his work on Golden Job, will also handle the action choreography.

The story takes place during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in 1941. To accurately recreate the era, the crew plans to film in the Greater Bay Area. Production should begin late this year, with a theatrical release targeted for 2027.
