Tom Cruise is reportedly already planning the future of the Mission: Impossible franchise, despite earlier suggestions that the series was nearing its end. Speculation is mounting that the actor has approached acclaimed filmmaker Chloé Zhao to write and direct a ninth instalment.

The reports originated from the celebrity gossip outlet Deuxmoi, which shared an anonymous tip claiming the pair have already begun workshopping a story. According to the report, “Chloé Zhao is in talks to write/direct. Tom sought her out, they’ve workshopped a treatment, script is underway.”

While these claims remain unverified, they have sparked significant interest in the film industry. If true, it would mark the first time a new director has joined the franchise since 2015.

A potential change in direction

For the last decade, director Christopher McQuarrie has been the primary creative force behind the series, helming the last four films. Bringing in Zhao would represent a major shift in tone for the high-octane franchise.

Zhao is best known for her intimate, grounded storytelling in films like Nomadland, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Director. However, she is no stranger to large-scale productions, having directed the Marvel blockbuster Eternals.

The move could signal a desire to blend Zhao’s human-focused style with the elaborate stunts that have become the series’ trademark.

Balancing the budget

The franchise’s future has been a topic of discussion following the financial performance of recent entries. While the last film earned $600m (£480m) globally, it faced challenges due to a massive production budget reported to be over $400m.

High costs were attributed to significant delays and rewrites during the pandemic. Industry experts suggest that a new creative lead might help the franchise find a more sustainable path forward.

Tom Cruise’s busy schedule

Cruise is currently busy with other projects while the future of Ethan Hunt is decided. He is set to star in Digger, a new film from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, where he plays the world’s wealthiest man.
