Taeil, whose real name is Moon Tae-il, a former member of the prominent K-pop group NCT, has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison for rape. The verdict was delivered by the Seoul Central District Court on July 10, following his admission to the charges in June. The court’s decision also mandated that Taeil, 31, and his two accomplices, identified in South Korean reports only as Lee and Hong, complete 40 hours of a treatment programme designed for perpetrators of sexual violence.

The conviction stems from an incident in June 2024, when the three men admitted to taking turns assaulting their victim, a Chinese tourist, at Lee’s residence in Seoul. The court heard that the victim became “heavily intoxicated” after drinking with the men at a bar in the Itaewon district before being taken to the apartment.

‘Extremely Grave’ Crime

South Korean law classifies this specific type of offence as “aggravated” due to the involvement of multiple individuals in the assault, and as a “quasi-rape” because the victim was unconscious and therefore incapable of resistance.

Despite the court describing the crime as “extremely grave,” the sentence handed down was half of the seven-year prison term prosecutors had initially sought for each defendant. The court’s leniency was attributed to the fact that Taeil and his accomplices were first-time offenders and had reportedly reached a settlement with the victim, who did not wish for further punishment. Following the sentencing, all three men were immediately taken into custody.

Departure from NCT and Ongoing Scrutiny

Allegations against Moon Tae-il first emerged in August of last year. At that time, NCT’s parent company, SM Entertainment, announced his departure from the group, though specific details of the criminal case were not publicly known. SM later terminated Taeil’s contract entirely in October as the investigation progressed.

NCT, introduced as a K-pop band in January 2016, is known for its experimental music and has garnered international attention, with some releases charting on Billboard.

The case has drawn significant attention, given Taeil’s public profile as a K-pop idol. While the court noted the defendants had acknowledged their crimes and reached a settlement, the incident has prompted wider discussions surrounding conduct within the entertainment industry and legal interpretations of consent.
