What happens when someone hijacks your mind? That’s the unnerving dilemma at the heart of Peacock’s upcoming espionage thriller The Copenhagen Test, with Simu Liu stepping into one of his darkest, most psychologically fraught roles yet.

The trailer for the UCP-produced series dropped Monday, ahead of its full-season release on 27 December — and it’s already shaping up to be one of the year’s boldest takes on surveillance culture, identity and power.

According to the official synopsis, the “series follows first-generation Chinese-American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale, who realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears. Caught between his shadowy agency and the unknown hackers, he must maintain a performance 24/7 to flush out who’s responsible and prove where his allegiance lies.”

Liu’s Alexander Hale sits at the intersection of state pressure, technological paranoia and cultural expectation — themes that feel especially pointed for a first-generation Chinese-American lead navigating visibility and vulnerability.

Alongside Liu, the series stars Melissa Barrera, Sinclair Daniel, Brian d’Arcy James, Mark O’Brien and Kathleen Chalfant. Barrera plays the operative assigned to monitor Alexander — while the trailer hints at complications far beyond the mission brief.

“They want me to play the girlfriend,” she tells him. He shoots back: “Or you’re just keeping an eye on me.”

It’s a dynamic that suggests intimacy as subterfuge, trust as performance — a perfect fit for a show premised on constant surveillance, including the kind that comes from within.

The Copenhagen Test comes from creator Thomas Brandon, who serves as executive producer, writer and co-showrunner. Jennifer Yale joins as co-showrunner, writer and executive producer, with a powerhouse production slate including Liu, James Wan, Michael Clear, Rob Hackett and Mark Winemaker. Jet Wilkinson executive produces and directs the first two episodes.

With its blend of psychological thriller, identity politics and techno-espionage, The Copenhagen Test positions Liu once again at the centre of a story about who gets to define truth — and who gets to steal it.
