John Woo’s seminal 1992 action film, Hard Boiled, has been given a 4K restoration, with its original negative rescued and brought back to life. The film, renowned for its intense action sequences and Chow Yun-fat’s iconic performance, will now see a widespread international release, including in the UK.
For years, the future of Hard Boiled and other Hong Kong cinema classics faced uncertainty due to complex rights issues. The original production company, Golden Princess, went out of business in the mid-1990s, and its film library’s rights were fragmented. Fortune Star initially acquired distribution rights for Asia, with other rights eventually falling to a real estate conglomerate, Kowloon Development Company (KDC). It was feared that a generation of classic films might remain locked away, as KDC was reluctant to sell individual film rights.
Rescue and Restoration Effort
A significant breakthrough came in January 2025 when Shout! Studios acquired the entire Golden Princess film archive, comprising 156 titles. This acquisition has paved the way for the restoration and re-release of many beloved films, including Woo’s A Better Tomorrow trilogy, Ringo Lam’s City On Fire, and Hard Boiled.
The restoration process for Hard Boiled was extensive. The 33-year-old print, located in the Hong Kong Film Archive, showed considerable signs of age, including dust, scratches, and tears. Michael Coronado, a film restoration expert at Duplitech, noted a “significant tear that had split the image across the frame,” requiring “skilled restoration artists [to use] clone-painting techniques by overlaying adjacent frames to repair the damaged footage.”
Henry Weintraub, restoration supervisor at Shout!, described the work as a “labour of love.” He added, “Hard Boiled means a lot to so many people, myself included, and I wanted to be sure we did it justice. It was important to preserve the original look and sound design of the era, while also enhancing both to bring out their full potential.”
UK and International Release
The restored Hard Boiled is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival as part of its Cannes Classics section. Following this, it will be released on 4K Blu-ray, aiming to be the definitive home version of the action classic.
In the UK, Arrow Films has secured the rights to release 156 Hong Kong titles from the acquired Golden Princess library, including Hard Boiled and The Killer. Arrow Films plans theatrical re-releases for select titles, with the first wave of physical media releases through its Arrow Video label targeted for 2026. Shout! Studios will handle the US release of Hard Boiled on disc from 25 June.

Many of these titles have been unavailable or out-of-print outside Asia for decades. Shout!
