Get ready for more gun-fu and bone-crunching action, because Lionsgate is expanding the John Wick universe, and they’ve tapped a true legend to lead the charge. Martial arts icon Donnie Yen, the man who brought Caine to life in John Wick: Chapter 4, is stepping behind the camera and in front of it for a standalone film centered on the blind assassin.
This isn’t just another spin-off; this is a Donnie Yen-directed, Donnie Yen-starring action extravaganza. Production is slated to begin later this year, and the project is being billed as an English-language, Hong Kong-style action thriller. Think stylish, brutal, and packed with the kind of kinetic energy that Yen himself helped pioneer.
Mattson Tomlin, the writer of the upcoming The Batman Part II and the adaptation of Keanu Reeves’ comic BRZRKR, is on board to write the script, following a previous draft by Robert Askins. Franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, along with Chad Stahelski, are producing, ensuring this spin-off has the John Wick DNA.
While details on the plot are being kept tighter than John Wick’s suit after a gunfight, we know it will continue Caine’s story following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, exploring his life now that he’s free from the High Table’s control.
This project is a big deal for action cinema. Yen, the star of Ip Man, Flash Point, Rogue One, and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, is a master of his genre. Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson is clearly excited, stating, “From the moment Chad and Donnie pitched the idea of a Donnie Yen-style action film in the mode of John Wick, I was all in. Donnie is not only an incredible, charismatic star but a smart, cinematic director who knows how to deliver massively entertaining action for a global audience.”
Yen himself seems ready for the challenge, saying, “The John Wick films have set an immensely high standard for action filmmaking, and I greatly appreciate Lionsgate giving me the opportunity to further elevate the franchise. I am both thrilled and deeply inspired to make this happen.”
Stahelski, the architect of the John Wick franchise’s signature action, adds, “One of my favorite characters in the John Wick world is Caine. To have the chance to dive into his world and discover all his adventures excites us all. We envision a modern day kung-fu classic that explores the John Wick world, and who better to helm it than Donnie Yen himself? His understanding of the culture, the world and, of course, the action, make him the perfect director for this project.”
