A heated debate in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District has sparked viral attention after Lily Tang Williams, a Republican who fled communist China, slammed her Democratic opponent Maggie Goodlander for being out of touch with everyday Americans. Williams, who escaped Mao Zedong’s regime and built a life in the United States with only $100 in her pocket, wasted no time highlighting the vast gap between their experiences.

“You are wealthy,” Williams declared, “You’re worth $20 million to $30 million. How do you know about regular people’s suffering? Do you go shopping? Go to Walmart? Buy food?” Williams, now a prominent advocate for fiscal conservatism, leaned into her own humble beginnings and her deep connection to regular people in New Hampshire.

Goodlander, 38, whose extensive political pedigree includes working for Senators Joe Lieberman and John McCain, faced intense criticism from Williams for allegedly pretending to relate to working-class struggles. Despite owning a $1.2 million home, Goodlander previously presented herself as a renter. Williams didn’t hold back: “You pretend to be a renter in Nashua a few months ago, move back to run for this open seat with millions of dollars from Washington D.C. insiders,” she said. “Just go back to your $2 million home in Portsmouth.”

Goodlander tried to defend her background, citing her experience working in foreign policy and her lifetime ban from Russia as credentials. However, Williams, known for her no-nonsense style, continued to grill her on economic issues. “Show me the math,” Williams challenged, arguing that Goodlander’s policies would hurt Americans. “Borrow money from China? Or print money to drive up inflation?”

Despite Goodlander’s eight-point lead in polls, Williams’ passionate performance earned a surprising endorsement from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., adding momentum to her campaign. Williams’ criticisms of ongoing U.S. support for Ukraine also resonated, as she questioned the sustainability of endless financial aid: “So many people have died. It’s time to bring peace and talk to people.”
