Netflix is set to unleash a fiery new animated series, Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld, and it’s got Ali Wong facing off against more than just teenage drama. Wong voices Jentry Chau, a Chinese-American high schooler who’s hiding a secret: she’s got superpowers.

“If a teenager had superpowers, I don’t think she would take it very well,” says series creator Echo Wu. “I think she would actually hide it. She would think it’s social suicide to have powers in a time of your life where you’re trying to fit in and be cool.”

But hiding her powers becomes impossible when a demon king decides he wants them for himself. Jentry’s suddenly thrown into a world of ghosts, mythical creatures, and epic battles, all while trying to navigate the everyday trials of high school.

Think classic Saturday morning cartoons with a modern twist, and you’re on the right track. Wu aimed for a grounded feel, explaining, “I wanted this show to feel super grounded. I think it’s refreshing in animation when you have a series that isn’t about this magical realm. I wanted it to feel genuine and the characters to be in our world.”

Jentry’s not alone in her fight. She’s got her weapons expert great-aunt and a millennia-old jiangshi (a Chinese hopping vampire) by her side. With a voice cast that includes Bowen Yang, Lucy Liu, and Jimmy O. Yang, this series is shaping up to be a must-watch.

Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld premieres on Netflix December 5th. Don’t miss out on the action!
