Hulu is set to premiere a new limited series, Interior Chinatown, based on Charles Yu’s award-winning novel. The show follows Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang), an aspiring actor stuck playing background roles in a fictional police procedural called ‘Black & White.’

“In Chinatown, nothing ever changes,” Willis explains in the trailer, highlighting the stagnant reality he feels trapped in.  But things take a turn when he becomes a witness to a crime, thrusting him into the spotlight and a web of mystery.

Chloe Bennet stars as Detective Lana Lee, who appears to team up with Willis to uncover the truth.  “There’s something going on in Chinatown,” she warns in the trailer.  The series also features a talented ensemble cast, including Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show) as Fatty Choi, Lisa Gilroy, Sullivan Jones, Archie Kao, and Diana Lin.

The trailer blends elements of mystery and action, with Willis asserting that “kung fu could break out at any moment,” a claim quickly followed by a fight scene with Chieng’s character.

Yu, who also serves as showrunner, describes the series as starting off “as something familiar (a police procedural), then spiraling into offbeat heroic fantasy, stomping all over stereotypes along the way.”
