In a genre-bending twist, Hulu’s upcoming series Interior Chinatown invites viewers into the surreal world of Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang), a background actor yearning for more than his bit part on the police procedural show Black & White. Trapped in a cycle of clichéd roles and stereotypes, Wu’s life takes an unexpected turn when he witnesses a crime, propelling him into a real-life investigation filled with unexpected twists and hidden family secrets.

The series, based on Charles Yu’s award-winning novel of the same name, promises a unique blend of crime, comedy, and metafiction. Interior Chinatown explores the Asian-American experience in Hollywood with a satirical lens, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. As Willis navigates the complexities of his character’s life within a show, he also uncovers deeper truths about himself and his family’s past.

Joining Jimmy O. Yang is a talented ensemble cast, including Chloe Bennet as the captivating Detective Lana Lee and Ronny Chieng as Fatty Choi, Wu’s loyal best friend and confidant. The series boasts a pilot directed by the acclaimed Taika Waititi, who also serves as executive producer, ensuring a distinct visual style and comedic sensibility.

As series creator Charles Yu explains, adapting his novel into a television series required a creative reimagining. “The DNA is the same, but if you read the book, there’s no way to adapt it one-for-one. You have to rethink the whole concept,” Yu reveals. This reimagining promises to expand the story’s universe while staying true to its core themes.
