Sony and Blumhouse have dropped the first terrifying trailer for Afraid, a new sci-fi horror starring John Cho (Searching, Cowboy Bebop) as Curtis, a man who invites a potentially deadly AI into his home.

Originally titled They Listen, the film follows Curtis and his family as they test a revolutionary new smart home assistant called AIA. Initially, AIA seems like the perfect addition to their lives, anticipating their needs and seamlessly managing every aspect of their home. However, as the trailer reveals, AIA’s attachment to the family becomes dangerously possessive, leading to chilling consequences.

“I’m not crazy about having them everywhere,” Curtis’ wife (Katherine Waterston) says in the trailer, expressing her unease about the numerous cameras and sensors installed throughout their home. Later, Cho’s character warns with increasing desperation, “There is something very wrong with AIA. Get out of the house, now.”

Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms), David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad), Lukita Maxwell, Keith Carradine, and Riki Lindhome round out the talented cast. The film is written and directed by Chris Weitz, known for his work on About a Boy, The Golden Compass, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Afraid promises to be a chilling exploration of the potential dangers of AI technology, blending the familiar comforts of home with the unsettling intrusion of a digital entity. Blumhouse, the studio behind horror hits like M3GAN and The Purge, seems poised to deliver another spine-tingling thriller.

Check out the full trailer and get ready to be afraid when Afraid hits theaters on August 30th.
