FX and Hulu have confirmed their ambitious plan to continue the critically acclaimed drama Shōgun with two additional seasons, extending the saga beyond James Clavell’s original novel. This announcement follows a leak in early May suggesting the network was exploring a continuation of the series, originally billed as a limited series.

A writers’ room will be assembled this summer to delve into potential storylines, with the show’s key creatives – co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, executive producer Michaela Clavell, and star Hiroyuki Sanada – all returning to their roles.

While not a formal renewal, this development represents a significant step forward for the series, which has already achieved record-breaking viewership for FX, accumulating the most global streaming hours in the network’s history. All 10 episodes of the first season are currently available on Hulu.

The decision to continue Shōgun also has implications for its Emmy categorization. Initially submitted as a limited series, it will now compete in the drama series category, reflecting the ongoing nature of the narrative.

This expansion of Shōgun reflects a growing trend in television, where the success of limited series often leads to their continuation, driven by audience demand and creative opportunities.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the pivotal role of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, had previously signed an “if-come” deal, indicating his commitment to return should further seasons be greenlit. His involvement is crucial, given his central role in the series and its exploration of 17th-century Japanese power struggles.

The production of Shōgun marks a significant investment for FX, as it is reportedly the most expensive scripted show in the network’s history. Its global success, particularly on streaming platforms like Hulu, Disney+, and Star+, underscores the appetite for historical dramas with complex characters and rich cultural settings.

While the creators had initially envisioned the first season as a self-contained story, the immense popularity and potential for further exploration have paved the way for this exciting new chapter in the “Shōgun” saga. As the writers’ room convenes this summer, fans can anticipate an even deeper dive into the world of feudal Japan and the captivating characters that inhabit it.
