Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D actress Chloe Bennet has opened up about her struggles as an Asian American actress whilst promoting her new film Abominable.

Talking to the Daily Mail at the Toronto International Film Festival, Bennet said she felt “boxed” in due to being half-Chinese.

“Every audition had to do with my race,” she says. “I was exhausted by how much I was boxed in.”

Bennet, who has a Chinese American father and Caucasian mother, changed her original surname from Wang to Bennet to secure roles.

“I’m still Chloe Wang, all that changed is people’s perception of me,” she said. “I was booked the first audition I went on after I changed my name.”

In Abominable, Bennet voices Yi – an Asian American character who encounters a yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai.

Abominable will hit theatres on Frida 27 September. To read our review of the film, click here.
