‘Abominable’ earns 2019’s biggest opening for animated film in US

LA Times reports that Abominable has officially had this year’s biggest opening weekend for an animated film in the US.

The Universal film opened with $20.9 million, making it the the third original film open at the number 1 spot at the box office. Abominable even beat analysts’ predictions of $17 million to $20 million.

Costing $75-million, the film is a co-production between DreamWorks Animation and China’s Pearl Studios.

Abominable stars Chloe Bennet who voices Yi, an Asian American character who encounters a yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai. In related news Bennet recently said she as “boxed in” by her Asian American race.
