Hello Kitty is getting a Hollywood film adaptation.

The Japan Times reports that a film adaptation of cartoon character Hello Kitty is in the works.

Sanrio – the company behind the beloved Japanese cartoon cat – is teaming up with New Line Cinema and FlynnPictureCo. to create an English-language film. Warner Brothers will distribute the film globally.

Talks about the film’s rights have been held over the last five years.

“Hello Kitty has long been a symbol of friendship and we hope this film will only serve to grow that circle of friendship around the world,” said Sanrio CEO Shintaro Tsuji.

The Hello Kitty film follows in the footsteps of Pokemon Detective Pikachu, which saw the partnership of Japanese companies Toho Co and The Pokemon Company with US companies Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.
