According to Taiwan News, New York City politician John Liu has become the first Taiwan-born US State Senator.

Liu won the race for New York State Senate District 11 in yesterday’s general election with 31,858 votes, at 55 percent of those cast. Republican rival Vickie Paladino earned 10,961 votes, or 24 percent.

“We took this senate seat back for a true Democrat!” Liu declared after his victory was announced.

The 51-year-old politician was born in Taiwan but moved to Flushing, New York City, at the age of five. He was the first Asian American to be elected to the New York City Council.

U.S. Congresswomen Grace Meng and New York assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou, who are also Taiwanese, also won their bids for reelection.
