John Cho has discussed his upcoming film Search and the importance of his Asian American family in the movie.

Speaking to Variety, John Cho said having an all Asian American family in his upcoming film was “exciting”.

“Another thing I was excited by was having an all Asian American family,” Cho said. “That to me in a dramatic context was another small exciting thing.”

Cho added that his partners and families in other films in the past have not been Asian. “In fact I’m usually paired with someone who’s not Asian, which is progressive in its own sense,” he said. “But to have a complete family that was completely Asian American was an interesting thing. It wasn’t what it was about but it was a part of it and I like that.”

Search, which also stars Debra Messing, focuses on a father who searches for his missing 16-year-old daughter. Using his online detective skills, he combs through clues left on her laptop. The film uses point-of-view camera angles from smartphones and computer screens.

The thriller is co-written and directed by Aneesh Chaganty.
