Sonoya Mizuno will join the cast of Crazy Rich Asians.

Crazy Rich Asians is based on Kevin Kwan’s New York Times best-selling novel of the same name and will feature an all-Asian cast.  Directed by Jon M Chu, the film centres on the lives of wealthy Chinese families living in Singapore.

The story follows Rachel Chu (Wu), an American-born Chinese economics professor who travels to Singapore for her boyfriend’s best friend’s wedding. It quickly becomes apparent that her boyfriend Nick and his family are incredibly wealthy. Rachel soon realises that Nick may just be the most desirable bachelor in Asia and that every other single woman in his social class is jealous of her and wants to bring her down.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Mizuno will play Araminta, the fiancee of Nick’s best friend, Colin – a major fashion icon in Singapore.

Mizuno is an actress and dancer, most known for her role as a cyborg assistant in Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Ex Machina. The actress was born in Japan to a Japanese father and half Argentinian half English mother and was raise in the UK.

In October 2016, Mizuno spoke to Resonate about East Asian representation and casting on screen. “I don’t fit easily into casting roles because I’m considered different,” Mizuno said.

“A more subtle problem lies in the fact that Asian actors have fewer opportunities to develop their skills in comparison to their peers. Therefore their career progression is stunted, and from that a cycle of sorts is created.”

Most recently, Mizuno appeared in La La Land as Caitlin, one of Emma Stone’s onscreen roommates.
