Niantic has announced that a handful of generation 2 Pokemon including Togepi and Pichu will be added to Pokemon Go.

However, the new creatures that featured in the original Game Boy games Pokemon Gold and Silver can only be hatched through eggs – meaning they cannot be found in the wild.

The announcement comes as a disappointment to many gamers who were expected a much larger update. Some speculated legendary generation 1 Pokemon might be added or even the entirety of the 100 new Pokemon from Gold and Silver.

Instead, Togepi, Pichu and “several more select Pokemon” have been added through the egg hatching feature.

Paul Tassi from Forbes writes, “a couple Gen 2 Pokémon hatching only from eggs is certainly not what players wanted to see.”

“Starting later today, Trainers will have the opportunity to hatch these and several other Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto Region in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games,” Niantic said in a blog post. “These are the first of more Pokémon coming to Pokémon GO over the next few months.”

Additionally, players will have the opportunity to catch a limited edition Pikachu wearing a “festive hat” until 29 December.
