A crayfish in China that sacrificed its own claw to escape a boiling hot pot has become an online hero.

As reported by the Guardian, a video clip of a crayfish sacrificing its own limb to survive being cooked in a spicy hot pot in China has turned the crustacean into an internet hero.

In the 11 second video clip, the crayfish is seen pulling its claw out of the spicy soup before gripping it with the other claw and detaching it to escape.

First posted on Weibo by a user named Jiuke, the clip has quickly become viral. Jiuke said he has since adopted the crayfish as a pet.

“I let him live,” Jiuke said. “I already took him home and am raising him in an aquarium.”

The production of crayfish in China has more than tripled from 2007 to 850,000 tonnes in 2017.
