A young woman has sparked a major investigation after uploading a chilling mobile phone recording of her private-hire car journey online. Sarah Lim, a twenty-year-old student and content creator, felt compelled to record her driver after his casual conversation turned increasingly invasive during a daytime trip to her workplace.

The one-minute clip, uploaded to her TikTok account, has rapidly gone viral, accumulating over 222,000 views as furious social media users demand immediate safety action from transport regulators.

Trapped in a Moving Vehicle

The distressing footage captures the moment the older driver began making highly targeted personal remarks about the young passenger’s physical appearance and ethnic background.

“For a Chinese, you got really nice tan skin,” the driver can be heard saying as Lim sits in the back seat. He later adds: “You’re charming. Oh my God, I love Cantonese girls. They’re so good-looking, man.”

The driver continues his intrusive monologue by asking the student her exact age before proclaiming that Cantonese is “a very sexy language to learn.” Throughout the recording, a visibly shaken Lim attempts to de-escalate the situation by laughing nervously and looking out of the window to avoid eye contact.

Lim explained that the unsettling behaviour began long before she activated her phone camera. “He was asking me quite a bit of personal questions before I started filming – stuff like how I made his day (said it several times), I’m so interesting, and I just overall felt uneasy,” she wrote. “When I first got into the cab, I felt the convo started getting weirder and weirder so I immediately started recording in case he said anything out of line.”

@sarxh.lim I was otw to a Videoshoot for work. When I first got into the cab, I felt the convo started getting weirder and weirder so I immediately started recording incase he said anything out of line. ( I faced the camera towards me becos I didn’t want the uncle to know I was recording what he was saying ) At least I wud have evidence if I needed to make a report to back up my statement. – I mean naturally the first thing u wud do in a sit like that. Usually in awk situations I js laugh it off or smile, i shud have js put on my headphones atm. He was asking me quite a bit of personal question before I started filming – stuff like how I made his day ( said it several times ) I’m so interesting, and I just overall felt uneasy. At that time,I wasn’t too sure if what he said was counted as out of line or not, so I told my friends & parents abt it and they agreeed that smth was a bit off…. So I reported it alr. Maybe he was trying to be nice but it just came out wrong?? But yea I posted this vid as a reminder to be safe and wary,- I wanna spread awareness that this isn’t okay #sg ♬ original sound – Sarah Lim ⋆˙⟡

Transport Firm Forces Immediate Safety Callback

While Lim did not explicitly name the ride-hailing company in her video description, the industry giant Grab Singapore moved quickly to issue a public apology in her comments section to mitigate a growing public relations crisis.

A safety representative named Lea wrote: “Hi Sarah, I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Feeling unsafe or uncomfortable is never okay. We’ve got your report logged under case CAS-100065525179. Please know that our driver team is already looking into this and taking action as we speak.” The firm confirmed that their specialized safety team launched an internal investigation and scheduled an emergency callback to gather specific details.

The incident follows a severe warning from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) regarding passenger safety in private-hire vehicles. Under current vocational licence laws, drivers face severe penalties, including immediate licence revocation, if they verbally insult, intimidate, or sexually harass passengers.

Furious Social Media Users Split Over ‘Too Nice’ Response

The viral video has ignited a fierce debate across internet forums, with thousands of viewers expressing disgust at the driver’s predatory behaviour, while others debated how women should handle transport boundary violations.

“What is up with all these horny old men PHV drivers who are being weird… Please tell me you reported this. Incredibly uncomfortable to watch as a viewer,” posted one outraged user.

Another fellow driver commented on the thread to distance the wider industry from the incident, stating: “As a driver myself, I would never speak to female passengers this way. This is completely unprofessional and creepy.”

However, a segment of the online community questioned why the passenger continued to speak with the driver during the journey. One forum member remarked: “I don’t understand why passengers engage in such conversations with the drivers. They already know it’s out of line, just zone out, look at the phone, whatever!”

Other women immediately pushed back against the victim-blaming sentiment, pointing out the dangerous dynamics of being trapped inside a moving car with a stranger.

“Some girls are too nice… don’t be afraid to be rude when protecting yourself,” a user responded. “You’re too nice haha, next time bring headphones and don’t talk to anybody beyond saying hello uncle.”
