Charles Melton has entered negotiations to join Matt Damon and Sandra Oh in a highly anticipated untitled film at Universal Pictures. The movie marks the next project from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the Oscar-winning film-making duo known as the Daniels.
Universal Pictures has chosen to keep the plot details confidential. However, production records show that filming will begin in Los Angeles this summer.
A Shifting Cast and New Timeline
The project has already undergone significant changes ahead of filming. Matt Damon stepped into the leading role to replace Ryan Gosling, who exited the production due to scheduling conflicts.
Universal also updated the theatrical release schedule for the film. Audiences can expect the movie to debut in cinemas on 19 November 2027, moving from an earlier provisional summer date.

The Daniels will write and direct the feature. They are also producing the film alongside Jonathan Wang through their production company, Playgrounds, under their overall deal with Universal. The team previously produced The AI Doc for Universal’s speciality division, Focus Features.
Melton Continues High Profile Run
You will likely recognise Charles Melton from his recent breakout performances on television and film. He earned critical acclaim for his role in the Netflix limited series Beef, which positions him as a strong contender for the upcoming Emmy awards season. He also spent several seasons playing Reggie Mantle on the popular CW series Riverdale.

On the cinema side, Melton recently starred in Her Private Hell, a film by director Nicolas Winding Refn. The feature drew a highly divided reaction from critics and audiences when it held its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The upcoming Universal film serves as the definitive follow-up for the Daniels after their massive success with Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022. That movie earned more than 140 million dollars globally and secured seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. With a high-profile ensemble taking shape, the new film represents a major theatrical priority for the studio.
