Shunji Iwai’s classic debut, Love Letter, is returning to the big screen. Film Movement Classics confirmed the 1995 film will receive a 4K restoration, marking its first major high-definition theatrical run in North America starting 5 June 2026.
The Return of a Japanese Classic
Love Letter is often cited as one of the most influential Japanese dramas of the 90s. The story follows Hiroko Watanabe, a woman grieving her fiancé who died in a climbing accident. She sends a letter to his old childhood address as a way to cope, expecting nothing back. Instead, she receives a reply from a woman with the same name as her late partner, sparking a connection that uncovers forgotten details about his life.

The film was a massive hit across Asia upon its release, known for its emotional weight and the dual performance of lead actress Miho Nakayama. This restoration allows a new generation to see the snowy landscapes of Hokkaido in 4K.
Celebrating 25 Years of All About Lily Chou-Chou
The theatrical event also includes screenings of Iwai’s 2001 film, All About Lily Chou-Chou, which turns 25 in 2026. While Love Letter focuses on nostalgia and memory, Lily Chou-Chou is a much darker look at youth culture.
It follows Yuichi, a bullied teenager who finds an escape through the fan forums and music of a fictional pop star. The film is famous for its early use of digital cinematography and its exploration of how the internet changed teenage life at the turn of the millennium.

Why It Matters
Shunji Iwai helped define a specific era of Japanese cinema. His style influenced many modern directors by focusing on the quiet, internal lives of his characters. Bringing these films back to theatres gives fans a chance to see them as intended, especially with Love Letter receiving a significant visual upgrade.
