FX’s Shōgun continues to expand its world. As production on the Emmy-winning series ramps up in Vancouver, five more actors have joined the cast for its highly anticipated second season — Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi, and Takashi Yamaguchi.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, details on their characters remain under wraps, but names have been revealed: Gabriel, Rin, Jōshin, Saitō, and Kanō, respectively. They’ll join returning leads Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis, reprising their roles as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and English navigator John Blackthorne in a story set over a decade after the events of Season 1.

The latest additions join previously announced cast members Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki, Jun Kunimura, and Ren Meguro, as reported by Deadline and Variety.

Among the newcomers, Takashi Yamaguchi is perhaps the most familiar to international audiences, known for Letters From Iwo Jima, Pachinko, and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Ryô Satô appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Silence, while Mantaro Koichi and Seishiro Nishida bring extensive Japanese film and television experience. Shōgun marks Kukihara’s first major screen role.

Season 2 will follow the aftermath of Toranaga’s political rise, exploring the turbulent shifts in feudal Japan’s power structure. In interviews, co-creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have teased a “saga first and foremost,” expanding beyond James Clavell’s original novel. Reports suggest viewers can expect unprecedented battle sequences and a central love story set against a Japan in transformation.

FX Productions continues to lead the project, with Sanada also executive-producing alongside Kondo, Marks, and others.

The first season of Shōgun earned critical acclaim for its historical authenticity, layered character work, and groundbreaking representation of Japanese culture in Western television. Its success helped push the boundaries for Asian-led dramas on mainstream platforms, winning multiple awards across the Emmys, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards.

With its expanded cast and generational scope, Shōgun’s second season looks set to deepen its exploration of power, faith, and identity — all while reaffirming FX and Hulu’s commitment to cinematic storytelling on the small screen.

Production is underway, with Shōgun expected to return in 2027.
